Oil tycoon and former business man, Rex Tillerson will now serve as the secretary of state, with close ties to Russia still strongly intact. There was much controversy following Trump’s nominee of Tillerson, as Tillerson had been awarded “Russian Order of Friendship,” by none other than Vladimir Putin himself; all while U.S. intelligence findings found that Russia had interfered with the U.S. Presidential election.
Tillerson won the position in a 56-to-43 vote.
Conveniently retired from being ExxonMobile’s chief executive, the appointment of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state puts humans rights, environmental protection, and other interest groups in a state of discomfort and uncertainty. With Trump’s immigration ban on the seven predominately Muslim countries still in effect, Tillerson’s job as chief diplomat will not have an easy start, according to former defense secretary Robert M. Gates.
Tillerson, with no geopolitical experience was chosen over Mitt Romney, formal presidential nominee for being overly critical of Trump’s tactics.
