Unverified rumors reveal that Assad may be dead and Russian forces are securing Damascus to avoid a power vacuum.
Social media has been bubbling over with claims that Assad has died or is in serious ill-health – a fact disputed by his regime.
Syria’s unquestionably oppressive dictatorial government, said in a statement he was in “excellent health and carrying out his functions quite naturally,” despite the fact he has not been seen in public in several days. They also claim enemies of the government regularly attempt to create unrest by claiming he is unwell.
Last night Faisal al-Qassim, a famous TV personality on Al Jazeera, said Assad was “bedridden” but not in a coma.
Since 2011, hundreds of thousands of Syrians have been killed in what is called a civil war, after Assad’s regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests. More than 10 million Syrians have since fled the country.
